Is Home Dialysis Better Than A Nursing Home Dialysis?

When patients have kidney failure, their bodies are unable to purify their blood, which is the primary function of the kidney. They must have a kidney transplant to stay healthy. Dialysis may be used for patients awaiting kidney transplants. This treatment procedure aids in the restoration of kidney function. If the patient is unable to undergo surgery, they may be required to undergo dialysis for an extended period of time. Depending on your preferences and other health needs, you can receive dialysis treatment at a variety of facilities. Because renal diseases are common in the elderly, patients can easily obtain treatment in a nursing home, a rehabilitation facility, or their own home.

Certified caregivers can provide in-home dialysis services. The in-home facility’s staff also teaches family members how to care for the patient after work hours. Nursing home dialysis, on the other hand, is done at a nursing home and adheres to a strict schedule established by the facility. This article will contrast home and nursing home dialysis.

In-Home Dialysis

In-home dialysis is the best option for patients who dislike traveling or value their privacy. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are the two types of home dialysis treatments. Haemodialysis, or HD, is the use of a dialysis machine and vascular tubings to transport blood to and from the dialysis machine. The machine purifies the blood in the same way that a normal kidney would. This procedure is performed three times per week. HD provides the patient with increased energy and control over their blood pressure.

In contrast, peritoneal dialysis does not require vascular access. Dialysis is instead performed through tiny blood vessels inserted in the abdomen, known as the peritoneum. Fluids inserted into the abdomen also aid in the cleaning of blood and waste removed through the same tubes.

Regardless of the dialysis treatment, the patient or caregivers must receive at least two weeks of training on how to perform self-cannulation, operate dialysis machines, and record treatment at home. You can also hire a trained caregiver to administer the treatment.

Advantages of Owning a Home Dialysis Facility

This form of treatment has its own benefits, such as;

Flexibility

Dialysis treatment is tailored to a patient’s schedule and performed in the comfort of their own home. The patient, caregivers, and family members have more freedom because they can choose when to receive treatment. Furthermore, while undergoing treatment, the patient can live a normal life and do whatever they want. Treatments are typically scheduled at night, but you can work with your therapists to arrange a more convenient time.

Quality of life

Patients who receive dialysis treatment at home have a higher quality of life because they are often surrounded by loved ones who provide emotional support. There is no faster way to recover than for your mother, father, or grandparents to manage renal failure while still spending time with their loved ones. Patients are not neglected, isolated, or subjected to the stresses of travel.

Privacy

In-home dialysis treatment frequently provides a high level of privacy. In contrast to treatment clinics and nursing homes, where patients receive dialysis in groups of up to ten at a time, in-home dialysis clients receive treatment in the privacy of their own homes.

Convenience and cost

Dialysis at home is extremely convenient for both the patient and their loved ones. Patients are not required to incur travel expenses, which could put financial strain on their families. Having a caregiver come to your home to administer treatment saves your family time and money.

Nursing Home Dialysis

Nursing home dialysis is a popular alternative to at-home dialysis. Residents live in a home-like setting where they are closely monitored and receive personalized care. To alleviate the anxiety associated with seeing different faces every day, nursing homes provide patients with regular nurses or healthcare attendants.

Nursing home treatment comes with the following advantages;

Social support

Although dialysis is frequently administered in a group setting, this may be a good thing because solidarity with other patients may provide moral support that speeds up the recovery process. Being treated at home deprives patients of the opportunity to meet other peers dealing with a similar condition, which may lead to depression, especially if they do not have close family members nearby.

No training required

Nursing homes are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a result, admitted residents are surrounded by trained professionals who understand what to do and when. They provide specialized and general care as needed, with no need for your loved one to perform self-annulation. Receiving treatment from trained personnel expedites recovery.

Close monitoring

Four Seasons, a certified nursing home in Brooklyn, ensures that patients are monitored around the clock. If their situation deteriorates, there are always trained therapists and registered nurses on hand to provide immediate emergency care and save the patient’s life.

Balanced life

Everything in nursing homes is planned, from treatment schedules to diets and recreational activities. Every resident leads a balanced life, which significantly improves their overall health by the time they finish therapy. Furthermore, these facilities are fully equipped to provide additional services such as occupational and speech therapy. Consider enrolling your mother, father, or grandparent in a nursing home if they are having difficulty with diet, gait, balance, or other health issues.
