The Difference Between Skilled Nursing Care and Nursing Homes

Many older adults in Brooklyn, NY need continued nursing, rehabilitation, and medical care after a hospital stay. Whether your loved one is recuperating from injury, illness, or surgery, a nursing center and skilled care facilities are the two care options that you can take your close families to. The rehabilitation nursing services in these facilities are almost similar and often overlap, but there are a few key differences. Knowing the different rehabilitation care industry is an essential first step to deciding the viable care options for your aging mom or dad.

The term ‘skilled nursing’ often brings confusion, and it is helpful to consider the term as the type of service offered in Brooklyn, NY. When your senior loved one needs a skilled care center or nursing and rehabilitation center, it doesn’t automatically mean placement in a rehabilitation center. There is a significant distinction between the help one needs for everyday living tasks such as eating, bathing, and dressing and the care one needs when recovering from health issues such as a stroke.

Nursing Center vs. Skilled Nursing Facility

The Primary Focus of Care

One major difference between rehabilitation care in a nursing home and a skilled care facility in Brooklyn, NY, is the primary focus of that care. A nursing home is a nursing and rehabilitation center where residents receive daily care. Some are more independent than others. Downtown Brooklyn nursing homes provide custodial care to residents needing help with dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, meals, catheter care, getting around safely, and managing oral medication.

When your loved one is a proud member of a Brooklyn nursing home community, they will live at the rehab center and can get regular life support medical care, such as twice-weekly dialysis. The staff at nursing centers do the laundry, provide meals, clean the rooms, and ensure the person is warm. In addition, they will dispense medication, ensure a clean facility and guide with crafts, exercise classes, games, and scenic tours around the nursing home.

Skilled nursing care in Brooklyn is focused on a patient’s health, rehabilitation nursing, and medical needs. At this nursing and rehabilitation center, your loved one will get:

  • rehabilitative treatment
  • occupational, physical, and speech therapy
  • respiratory care
  • wound care
  • IV therapy
  • medical monitoring
  • injections
  • day-to-day custodial care.

Skilled downtown Brooklyn nursing facilities are for people that have been admitted to a hospital stay with life-threatening medical issues such as:

  • Wound care
  • Stroke recovery
  • Rehab after an operation or illness
  • Serious memory issues
  • Terminal disease
  • Progressive vision
  • Around-the-clock care

The nursing staff at a skilled care facility in Brooklyn also help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, and ensuring the person is warm and feeding, just like in a nursing home. Patients at this type of Brooklyn rehabilitation center are usually there for a short term; then they go to a nursing home where they recover from their health issues or to assisted living. A few with terminal or chronic conditions might stay longer at a skilled care center.

Staff Profiles

A Brooklyn nursing center typically have staff trained to provide personal care, not medical professionals. The team may consist of non-professional concierge of health care givers such as nursing assistants, social workers, and personal care aides instead of medical professionals like therapists, physicians, and registered nurses.

Skilled care facilities in Brooklyn offer a higher level of care that consistently requires them to be staffed with medical professionals. When you take your loved one to a skilled care center, they will have more access to on-staff professionals than a nursing home. The staff can include physicians, licensed physical and occupational therapists, rehabilitative professionals, registered nurses, and speech/language pathologists.

Medical Coverage

Many people that require long-term or post-acute care options are senior people with disabilities and Medicare recipients. There is a distinct difference in the coverage for such people in a nursing home and a skilled care center. A skilled nursing facility in Brooklyn can get very expensive if one stays for an extended period.

Medicare covers skilled nursing services for up to 100 days as long as it is a medical necessity, and the skilled nursing stay is required after a hospital stay of at least three days. Medicare typically covers the first 20 days in full but co-paying kicks in after day 21 onwards. However, it does not cover custodial care in a nursing home. Long-term care insurance or the Medicaid program are your other coverage options.

In-Home Skilled Nursing Services

Some seniors choose to age in their own homes, where they get skilled nursing upkeep from a registered nurse who visits daily. Such a person can receive speech therapy or physical therapy at home. Skilled nursing service providers can also help with:

  • Physical, speech, and occupational therapy
  • Line dressing changes
  • Catheters
  • Feeding tubes
  • Treating wounds
  • Blood draws and injections
  • Training family

In-home skilled nursing services often vary depending on the locality and agency; thus, the list above is not comprehensive. When your doctor’s orders require intermittent and frequent care, the patient will be required to visit a medical center to receive the care.

Skilled Nursing Services Within Assisted Living Facilities

Some seniors require more assistance than they get at home, and that can be provided in an assisted living facility. Assisted living facilities in five boroughs offer a wide range of personal care services for people that want to retain some level of independence but still need support with their activities of daily living. Assisted living facilities differ widely, and the level of medical care available is determined by state licensing. Residents receive care from registered nurses, and all the nurses are available 24/7.
