What is Elderly Rehab & Why Is It Necessary?

Chronic conditions such as stroke, heart attack, spinal injuries, mental illness, and fall injuries affect the physical, mental, emotional, and sensory abilities of senior citizens. After an accident or illness, we recommend taking your loved one to a rehabilitation center for skilled nursing care and physical therapy. Most senior care centers in Brooklyn, NY offer physical, occupational, or speech therapy depending on the licensing and expertise of their nursing staff.

Rehabilitation can happen in an acute or sub-acute care center, assisted living community, long-term care facility, home health care center, inpatient or outpatient care center, or skilled nursing rehab center. Rehabilitation in itself does not reverse the damage already done to the nerves, muscles, bones, or organs but it helps restore their functionality and improves their wellbeing. Four Seasons elderly rehab Brooklyn is a top rehabilitation center that helps elderly patients regain their independence and health through physical therapy, assisted daily living, and dementia care, among others. Let’s explore the benefits of elderly rehab in Brooklyn, New York.

Physical therapy reduces pain and controls swelling

Fluid accumulation is the leading cause of swollen ankles among older adults. Illnesses and injuries, on the other hand, cause pain. During recovery, skilled nursing home staff members in New York have developed programs designed to eliminate the fluid that causes swellings. Certain foods cause swollen joints to worsen, while others promote good health.

With the assistance of nursing care staff, senior citizens can exercise their feet, hands, and joints. Apart from exercise, they also engage in physical therapy to alleviate pain and promote blood circulation, which reduces swelling. Senior healthcare centers in Brooklyn, NY, also conduct regular evaluations and case management to track progress during the rehab period. Remember to give their full medical history during admission to a nursing center.

Rehabilitation center programs in improve motion and flexibility

Senior family members begin to slow down and walk with difficulties as they age. Due to frail bones and little movement, they become prone to falls and eventually lose mobility. Some become completely immobile due to chronic conditions. However, your senior family member needs to walk at least 30 minutes a day to enjoy healthy and happy aging. This is why elderly nursing homes hire physical therapists to help your loved ones regain strength and gait.

Rehabilitation centers in Brooklyn NY focus on activities that promote mobility, speed, and agility. Some of these activities include walking sideways, backward and forward stepping, and changing in walking direction, among others. Lack of flexibility strains the joints and causes discomfort in the senior family member. A nursing home physical therapist may also recommend stretching and joint mobilization exercises to improve flexibility. This can be a stepping stone to independent living.

Nursing center training improves strength

Muscle mass and strength reduce with age, making it hard for seniors to continue doing the things they love. Reduced muscle mass among the elderly also increases their risk of falling. The fear of falling prevents many senior citizens from taking walks. If they manage to walk, they will walk slowly and for a short while because they get tired fast.

Rehabilitation center programs in Brooklyn NY are geared toward restoring balance and stability among senior family members, reducing their risk of falling. Balance exercises such as side raises also help boost confidence among seniors, motivating them to try daily walks for better health. Improved balance also helps them to walk in the right posture and at a faster pace.

Training for muscle mass and strength among seniors is offered under the supervision of a physical therapist to prevent injuries at the health center or nursing home. Most elderly rehab centers in Brooklyn NY offer training twice a week for a duration of 12 weeks, on a case-by-case basis. Nutrition also plays a major role in rebuilding muscle mass and restoring strength among seniors.

Elderly rehabilitation improves balance

The inner ear controls balance in human beings. Age causes the system responsible for balance to die. Loss of muscle mass and balance can affect your loved one’s gait. Certain medications can also cause seniors to have an unsteady gait. Coupled with conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, a lack of balance can be fatal to the health of your loved one. Diet, medication, and exercise can help senior family members regain their balance and enjoy healthy walks every day without wheelchairs or other assistive devices. A physical therapist in Brooklyn NY can diagnose the exact cause of balance problems and prescribe a suitable treatment plan and recreational activities.

Elderly rehab centers help patients recover from chronic conditions

Nursing home costs include treatment plans for your loved one until they are ready for discharge. A skilled nursing home has a unique environment and the right personnel and equipment to offer various medical interventions such as surgery and ultrasound to treat most chronic conditions among the elderly. These services are available in most senior health care facilities in Brooklyn, so if your preferred rehabilitation center does not offer these, they can always refer your loved one for treatment before resuming physical therapy sessions. You will allow such treatment by providing express written consent to the rehab center.
