What Type of Equipment is Used For Home Hemodialysis in Brooklyn?

Hemodialysis is a treatment used to process and remove waste from the blood in patients with kidney disease. Although it is not a quick or convenient treatment, having a home hemodialysis system has advantages.

Home hemodialysis (also known as “HD”) is a method of receiving dialysis at home for people with kidney disease. If you have kidney disease and your doctor recommends home hemodialysis, you should understand what it entails, the equipment required, and how it can benefit you. All of this and more will be covered in this article. Let’s get this party started!

What is the job of the kidney?

The kidneys are vital organs in the body that filter blood and remove waste products from the body. Kidneys also play an important role in regulating blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

When the kidneys fail, it can lead to a number of health issues. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), in which the kidneys can no longer function properly, is the most common type of kidney failure. This can result in increased blood levels of toxins (waste products) such as creatinine (a byproduct of muscle activity) and urea.

Home hemodialysis is a method of treating CKD. Every day, a machine is used to remove waste products from the blood. This improves the patient’s overall health and quality of life while also lowering the risk of kidney failure. If you have CKD symptoms, don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about home hemodialysis. What Exactly Is Hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is a medical procedure that cleans the blood of toxins and excess water. It works by inserting a dialyzer between the blood and the dialysis fluids. The dialyzer aids in the separation of various substances in the blood, leaving only pure plasma, a clear fluid.

The patient is connected to a machine that draws blood and passes it through the dialyzer. The dialyzer then cleans the blood, removing the toxins. As a result, the blood is very clean and not as watery.

If your kidneys are unable to properly clean your blood, you will accumulate excess water in your blood. This can result in hypertension, kidney disease, and heart disease. All of these are potentially fatal conditions that reduce one’s quality of life.

Dialysis is the only treatment available to remove excess water from the blood. Dialysis can be performed in a hospital or at home. Home dialysis is performed in the patient’s home. While hospital treatment is adequate, home dialysis alleviates the stress and discomfort associated with multiple visits to the hospital for dialysis treatment.

How Hemodialysis Works

Hemodialysis is performed by attaching a patient to a machine known as an extracorporeal hemodialysis machine. The artificial kidney device has dialysis filters that collect blood, clean it, and then return it to the patient.

The dialysis filters are responsible for separating the blood into plasma, which is simply water, and red blood cells. The red blood cells are then passed through another machine that removes the water from them. The end result is very clean blood that contains less water.

An intravenous (IV) catheter connects the patient to the hemodialysis machine. The blood is collected in a bag by the dialysis filters. The blood is then pumped through dialysis filters, which separate the various substances in the blood. The clean blood is then reintroduced into the patient’s veins. This is typically performed four to six times per day.

Home Dialysis System Components

A dialysis machine will be required if you decide to have dialysis treatment done at home. The machine uses cutting-edge technology to clean your blood of toxins and excess water in the privacy of your own home.

Below are the components of a home hemodialysis machine:

Dialysate solution – Dialysate solution is the solution that is used in home hemodialysis. It is usually made up of vitamins, minerals, and chemicals. You should choose a dialysate solution that’s been tested as safe for hemodialysis.

Dialysate filter – The dialysate filter is the part of the home dialysis system that collects the blood and cleans it. Dialysis is not entirely free of toxins and bacteria, so the dialysate filter traps these chemicals and bacteria to prevent them from entering the blood system.

Water separator – A water separator is used to separate the water from the dialysate.

Dialysis tubing – Dialysis tubing is used to connect the dialysate filter and water separator, dialysis filters, and the dialysis machine.

Dialysis machine – The dialysis machine is the part of the home hemodialysis system that cleans, separates, and then recombines the blood and dialysate.

Types of Home Hemodialysis in Brooklyn, New York City

There are different variants of hemodialysis that you can choose from whenever you are ready for Brooklyn home dialysis treatment. They are:

Conventional home hemodialysis

You and your caregiver will be trained on what to do, how to navigate the home dialysis machine, and how to solve minor problems that may arise. Dialysis is performed three times per week, with each session lasting three to four hours or more.

Short Daily Home Hemodialysis

This method of home dialysis also trains you and your caregiver. Dialysis is performed more days per week, approximately six to seven times per week, for fewer hours per session. As a result of the more frequent sessions, fewer toxins and excess water are flushed out of the system.

Your overall health improves as a result of not storing as many toxins in your system before the next session. As a result, you will have far fewer headaches, cramps, and nausea.

Nocturnal Home Hemodialysis

These dialysis treatment sessions will take place at night while you sleep, as the name implies. A session can last up to six hours and can be done every night or at least six nights a week. Your doctor will make certain that you and your caregiver are properly trained in the procedure.

It is possible to combine two types of home hemodialysis. This is determined by your diagnosis and the medications prescribed by your doctor. To track your progress, you must perform routine tests as directed by your doctor.

Advantages of a Home Hemodialysis System

There are many advantages to having a home hemodialysis system set up for you in your Brooklyn home. Those listed below are among them.

Quicker Dialysis Process – Many people who choose home hemodialysis are fed up with the high costs and long wait times associated with hospitals. Home hemodialysis is more efficient and faster than hospital hemodialysis, saving both time and money.

Convenient Scheduling – Home hemodialysis is more convenient than hospital dialysis. Patients do not have to wait in line for hours and can schedule appointments whenever they want. Home hemodialysis is also more convenient than other types of dialysis, such as peritoneal dialysis, because it eliminates the need for patients to travel from their homes to the dialysis center.

Energy Efficient Because home hemodialysis is a more energy-efficient form of dialysis than dialysis in a dialysis center, you won’t have to worry about power company bills. This is due to the fact that the home dialysis system only consumes a few watts of electricity.

Improved life – Patients who receive dialysis at home have better living conditions. This is due to the frequency with which dialysis is performed. When you have dialysis at home, you can have it done much more frequently than if you went to the hospital. As a result, Brooklyn home dialysis closely mimics the functions of the natural kidneys. As a result, the patient’s health has significantly improved.

Reduced stress on the heart – Kidney damage puts a lot of strain on the heart. The heart will have to deal with all of the toxins in the blood. Home dialysis allows patients to receive dialysis treatment more frequently than if they had to make appointments at the hospital. As a result, the heart will pump purer, healthier blood that is free of toxins and excess water. High blood pressure and heart disease are also reduced.

Better sleep quality – When your body is loaded with harmful toxins, you will sleep little or not at all because you will be in pain most of the time. However, with home dialysis, you will have better health and a better night’s sleep. Your nights will no longer be spent writhing in pain, but rather sleeping.

Possibility of carrying on with your usual activities – Patients with kidney disease usually miss out on a lot of activities due to their illness. Having dialysis treatment at home allows you to spend more time doing the things you enjoy. You can now spend time with your loved ones. You will also not miss out on your hobbies.

Increase in appetite – Because your body is free of toxins and excess water, which normally reduces your appetite for food, you will be able to eat more frequently and properly. Your body will be able to process your food, leaving you vitalized and nourished.

Less medication required – Because your system is regularly cleansed of harmful toxins, you will not need to take as many medications with home dialysis. Because your body systems will function better, you won’t need as many drugs.

Factors to Consider Before Purchasing a Home Dialysis System

Quality of Dialysate Solution – Dialysate solution that has been tested and found to be safe for use in hemodialysis is used in home hemodialysis systems. Before purchasing a home dialysis system, ensure that the dialysate solution has been proven to be safe and effective for use at home.

Quality of Filter – Dialysate filters that have passed quality control testing are used in home hemodialysis systems. To prevent waste from entering your bloodstream, the dialysate filter should have a clear, clean flow rate.

The durability of Dialysis Machine – The home hemodialysis system should be robust enough to last for an extended period of time. If the machine breaks, you should be able to replace it easily and affordably.

Ease of Use – The home hemodialysis system should be simple to use and require little maintenance. You don’t want to have to spend a lot of time on system maintenance.

NxStage Dialysis Equipment

The NxStage dialysis machine is used in hospitals and at home for hemodialysis treatments. It possesses all of the characteristics of a good dialysis machine listed above. It is simple to set up and use. It can be used by patients who need to travel or move from one location to another.

It also has flexibility in its usage in that you can choose how many hours at a time you want to use it and how many days per week you want to use it. Whatever your diagnosis, the NxStage dialysis machine is ideal for ridding your system of harmful toxins and returning you to an active lifestyle.
