Home Delivered Care

Home care aides play a pivotal role in helping individuals remain independent, whether due to age or disability. Home care, distinct from medical home health care, focuses on helping individuals with daily activities in their own homes. They can perform a variety of tasks, from preparing meals and doing light housework to providing transportation and companionship. Home care can be short- or long-term and is used by seniors, people with chronic illnesses, individuals with disabilities, and those recovering from surgery. Home care aides help clients stay safe, comfortable, and engaged in their daily routines.

At Four Seasons Healthcare Solutions, we understand the value of home care; our dedicated aides deliver personalized, compassionate care to clients every day. In honor of National Home Care Aide Week, we’re sharing five little-known facts about home care that highlight just how vital these services are to clients and families alike.

1.  Home Care is a Growing Field

About 70% of those using home care services are 65 or older. Seniors are the fastest growing age group; by 2034, there will be 77 million older Americans. It’s no wonder that home care is a growing profession. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the field will grow by 25% between 2021 and 2031—much faster than the average. This demand highlights how critical home care is to the overall healthcare landscape.

2.  Home Care Aides Foster Independence

One of the primary benefits of employing a home care aide is the ability to maintain independence. Home care allows clients to receive personalized aid in the comfort of their own homes. When surveyed, 77% of older adults want to remain in their homes and age in place for the long term. Home care aides can help with bathing, dressing, eating, and other activities while encouraging individuals to take part to the best of their abilities. Research has shown that aging at home is linked to several health benefits, including improved quality of life, reduced healthcare costs, and increased social connectedness.

3.  Home Care Improves Family Relationships

It’s estimated that 44 million Americans 18 and older provide unpaid assistance and support to loved ones. Caring for an aging or disabled family member can be an emotional and physical burden. About one in 10 family caregivers report worsening physical health, up to 70% have clinical depression symptoms, and around six in 10 have worsening self-care (eating and exercising). By hiring a home care aide, families can focus on spending quality time as aides take on the daily responsibilities. By reducing caregiver burnout and creating space for meaningful interactions, family relationships can strengthen.

4.  Home Care Aides Provide Specialized Support

Though non-medical, home care aides can handle a wide range of client needs. For example, aides working with individuals with dementia may be trained in memory care, while those assisting clients with mobility issues know safe transfer practices and fall prevention. Medicare-certified home care aides have 75 hours of formal training and have passed an exam; there are also continuing education requirements. This expertise makes a big difference in maintaining the safety and comfort of clients, particularly for those with complex needs.

5.  Home Care Can Be Cost-Effective

For around-the-clock medical care, a nursing facility is likely to offer the most economical offer, averaging about $100,000 per year. But for assistance with essential needs, even for a 20-hour week, home care will be much more frugal, costing just around $28,000 yearly. If aging in place is possible and only supportive (not continual) help is required, home care makes a lot of sense. By employing a home care aide, clients can receive high-quality care without the added financial strain of moving into a facility.
