The fall season is a time marked by changes and new routines, whether it’s focusing on business after a vacation or gearing up for a new school year. As schedules get busy again, many families are wondering how to support the well-being of older loved ones. Nationally, nearly 18 million people are family caregivers tending to someone 65 or over who needs help because of physical, mental, or cognitive needs. For many, adult day care centers can provide an excellent solution, offering medical care, social interaction, and engaging activities while caregivers address their hectic schedules.
Adult day care are senior centers designed to support older adults who require supervised care during the day, or those who are isolated and lonely. These programs offer a safe environment where older adults may engage in social activities, receive therapeutic services, or get assistance with personal care tasks. Research shows that participants in adult day care have a better quality of life and that caregivers’ mood, health, and relationships improve while burnout decreases. While the exact level of services varies between centers, all adult day care aims to provide seniors with engaging care and caregivers with some free time during the weekday. In 2020, over 4000 adult day care centers served more than 257,400 participants in the U.S.
Choosing the right adult day care center is an important decision; understanding what to look for can make the process smoother. Here are five crucial questions to ask when researching adult day care centers.
1. What are the care needs and services provided?
Identify the specific care needs you or a loved one requires and use that to determine the “must haves.” Some facilities offer transportation, provide meals, and help with daily living activities. Others may offer medical care, including specialized services like dialysis or pharmacy support.
2. What activities are available?
Engaging and diverse programs help ensure the mental and emotional health of clients. Learn about the types of activities offered—are there exercise classes, arts and crafts, educational workshops, or social events? Look for possibilities that develop a sense of community with social interaction. It may also be worth asking if any individual plans are created for attendees.
3. What are the staff qualifications?
To ensure safety and well-being, investigate the qualifications and licensing of the adult day care’s staff. Inquire about the credentials of the healthcare providers, activity coordinators, and support staff. Also, look at the ratio of staff to participants; in general, the more staff per person, the better.
4. What is the cost?
Understanding the costs involved and exploring available financial assistance options is key. Adult day care centers vary in pricing; while Medicare generally doesn’t cover the fees, financial assistance may be available through other government programs, like Medicaid, the Veterans Health Administration, and state agencies.
5. How is client satisfaction measured?
Quality of care and client satisfaction can tell a lot about an adult day care provider. Ask about regular evaluations, feedback mechanisms, and accreditations to see how they go about improving their site and maintaining standards. If possible, speak with current participants and caregivers.
The best way to evaluate an adult day care location is to visit it in person. Go to more than one to see different environments and people in action. Sometimes, it’s best for the caregiver to inspect first and then revisit with their loved one to participate in activities. As National Adult Day Services Week approaches, it’s the perfect time to explore how an adult day care center can help your family. It can be a gamechanger for both the participant and caregiver. Sally White, whose husband uses local services, summed up the benefit, “I can’t put a price on what it’s done for us. Rodger has a routine and a community there and I keep my sanity by getting the bills paid and keeping the house in good condition and tidy so it’s safe for him here.”
