Mind Your Medicine for Healthy Aging

Two older adults learning about medication management at a pharmacy

As we grow older, we tend to rely more on medications. While about 48% of adults 18–44 years old take prescription medicine, over 89% of people over 65 do. This polypharmacy – or taking multiple drugs – is usually due to multiple chronic health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or arthritis, which are more likely to happen with age. Since taking medicines properly can prevent health complications, improve quality of life, and ensure safety, medication management is a key component of overall health management. For Healthy Aging Month, let’s explore what medication management is and ways to be successful at it.

Why is medication management important?

Medication management is more than just taking pills on time. It includes understanding medications, their side effects, and how they manage your health conditions. For example, you need to know if the drugs will interact poorly with any foods, other medicines, or supplements. Taking medications properly may prevent any side effects and provide relief in knowing just what to expect and when.

Poor medication management can lead to adverse drug reactions, hospitalizations, and even life-threatening situations. Research has shown that about one third of drug related hospital admissions are preventable; polypharmacy and old age are two of the main reasons for drug related hospitalization. Medication taken incorrectly causes 125,000 deaths per year. Proper medication management is crucial for healthy aging.

What are some ways to effectively manage medications?

Successful medication management is an ongoing process, but it doesn’t require radical changes. Here are five tips to help you be successful in managing your medicines.

1.  Review medication regularly with healthcare providers to ensure that all medications are necessary and effective. In addition to identifying potential drug interactions and adjusting dosages to minimize side effects, reviews can potentially decrease the number of prescriptions. “It is important for everyone to remember that medications should be used at the smallest dose for the shortest amount of time,” explains University of California Pharmacist Gina More is not always better.

2.  Keep medications organized to prevent missed doses and accidental overdoses. Using pill organizers, labeled containers, or medication management apps can help. Research has shown that simple pill boxes can make a big difference in maintaining a consistent medication schedule. One study found that 85% of seniors reported that a pill box helped manage medications.

3.  Understand the purpose and potential side effects of each medication. Research shows that when people are educated on their prescriptions, they are more likely to take the medicine, prevent interactions, be safer, and feel more satisfied with their care. Healthcare providers, including pharmacists, can help with information and resources.

4.  Establish a routine for taking medications consistently. For example, linking medication times to daily activities, such as meals or bedtime, can create a natural reminder. Setting alarms or using reminder apps are also effective strategies. Consistency is key to ensuring medications work effectively and prevent complications.

5.  Utilize a pharmacy service to simplify medication management. Many pharmacies will monitor new medications, give advice on best practices and over-the counter options, and fill or refill all prescriptions on the same day. Some pharmacy services are more proactive. Four Seasons pharmacy service will sort each dose in convenient, confusion-free packaging, monitor refill needs with provider and patient, and provide home delivery.

Medication management is a crucial component of a healthy aging plan. Achieving better health outcomes starts with taking an active role in your own well-being. By staying informed, consistent, and mindful of your medications, you can pave the way to a healthier, happier life.
